“SquareOne…part 2”
Howard University’s election season is over and the new School of Communications Student Council begins to settle into their duties as we all rush to turn in last minute assignments and prepare for finals. After speaking with the new President of Council, rising junior, Darius Thomas, I am convinced the upcoming year will be one to remember. The Baton Rouge native is all too familiar with the responsibility of serving as a part of the administration. Last year he and his current roommate, Joshua Crockett, broke ground as being the first freshman to ever run for the School of Communications council positions. Their success led to the forming of The Square One Administration. Even though the two classmates were new to campus life Darius felt, “School of C needed to start over, from the detailing of the constitution to the overall visibility on campus. Our goal was to make SOC a better functioning unit.”
It seems Square One was preparation for what’s next! Square One Part 2 is a chance to finish what was started but do things even better than before. Darius has a perspective that will be used to his advantage with this administration. He said, “Working with Josh last year as his Vice President I know what worked and what didn’t. I had a chance to learn behind the scenes successes and failures that I will take with me to Square One part 2.” Darius takes his new role seriously and says, “I treat this as a job and so does my staff. As president you can expect things to be handled faster because I am not limited with this title.”
The fresh and eager staff excites him to work harder and more efficiently for the upcoming year. “I love my staff; everyone including the E-board is ready and prepared to get to work.” There will still be the opportunity to participate in community service, such as, the DC Central Kitchen outings on every third Friday of the month. Square One part 2 Monday’s will remain in effect and a calendar of events will be posted to help everyone who stops by the council office stay informed.
This year from The Square One part 2 Administration you can continue to expect events that are creative and beneficial to your major, programs that are well planned, and a new initiative called Project Collaborate. This is an e-board only meeting of all the council’s campus wide to decide how to better provide for their individual schools in a way to benefit everyone.
There are exciting things taking place in the School of Communications so be prepared for what’s to come!
